"Oh, you want to write a suspense?"

A suspense novel literally builds tension throughout the story.

The reader isn't sure what's happening next, therefore, continuing to turn the page. 😊

The very first thing I can personally tell you since becoming a book coach and the reason I wanted to write this blog. Research and read the reviews of other books in your genre of interest.

Behind the book, your reader is waiting for the next thrill. Suspense stories typically focus on the mystery. Suspense can be different than the 'Horror' genre. Horror focuses on folklore and myths about spirits, monster's and the afterlife.

According to www.kindlepreneur.com,

"Happy moments increase tension."

As a reader, I personally toggle back and forth between suspense and romance. I personally have not written one, but I have gathered a few basic tips to share with my new author's just starting out.

Basic Quick Tips Writing Suspense

  • Give the reader something to worry about by withholding information.

  • Make the protagonist likeable and relatable and the villain believable.

  • Use foreshadowing, cliches and over used tropes sparingly and creatively.

  • End chapters strongly and reward the readers worrying with spectacular pay off.

  • Give the reader more information than the characters to create suspense.

Although Written Gold specializes in guiding authors through the book writing process, I personally will not coach a writer in this genre. I will however refer this client to a coach who has written in this genre. This doesn't mean the writer cannot benefit from my free or digital process. With supporting information and resources, the road to writing suspense starts with a discovery call with a book coaching professional.
